continued 2... My Time With Marion |
|
In my locker I have all kinds of tools, equipment and supplies with which I can help the students. Everything is in a box or a shelf and is logged onto a database so that I can find things faster. I really enjoy sharing my techniques and experiences with students. Currently I am working with Professor Eileen MacDonald and it is all because Marion gave me a chance and much encouragement. I will be forever grateful to Marion for letting me assist him with the night class.
Another thing I love about having Marion as a friend and a mentor is having had and continuing to have; numerous conversations with him concerning a wide range of topics. I have found him to be a man of incredible intelligence and vast knowledge of many things. He does not talk fast; he takes his time, chooses his works wisely and communicates his wisdom accurately and succinctly.
I really like using many of his quotes while working with students. One that sticks out is “why are we artists? We are artists because we don’t want to die; we want to live on through our work!” That one is fun to watch the reaction when quoted. Another is “art is anything you can get away with!” Yikes! And a favorite of mine is “kill the artist” meaning stop working on your print before you over-work it and screw it up!
“Being is more akin to energy than it is to matter” is another quote from Marion which gives one to pause. One theme that seems to permeate his work is “simultaneous co-existence of opposites”.
To this day, I periodically visit Marion at his home and almost always find him working on his passion, his yard. He has a very big yard. Several acres I assume. It is always manicured to the “endth degree”. One might call it a country estate. Every type of plant, flower and tree and can be found at “Casa de Epting”.
